Day 1 at Ojo de Agua, Guatemala

Monday morning, we left Piedra Partida and drove to the mountains arriving at Ojo de Agua (Eye of Water), a small village, 8000 feet above sea level, close to San Marcos City. We would set up camp there in Sunday School rooms of one of Ely’s churches there.

After lunch we loaded the jeep and 4x4 truck and drove to Llano Grande (Big Valley). I’m still looking for the valley, it was straight up and straight down all the way. We received news that there was a new road we could take and not have to do any walking. Four of us rode in the back of the truck while the others rode up front and in the Jeep.

The new road was adventurous, to say the least. It was very steep in places and barely wide enough for one vehicle to pass. The newly cut ground, was a bit loose in some places, also making the terrain difficult. Twice we had to push the 4x4 truck in the loose dirt. The air was thin making this task even harder.

We crossed one bridge with only inches to spare on either side. I was beginning to wonder if taking this new road was really a good idea. Soon we found a better road and the sides were lined with many people cheering for us. These were awaiting our arrival. My last count we had twenty one riding in the back of the truck with us!

The Bible school went well with one hundred and seventy children present. By 5PM we made the journey back to Ojo de Agua arriving in time for supper at 6:30. All in all it had been a good day.
