You have to love a good road trip. Even when I don't know exactly where I'm going, which is most of the time, I just enjoy the journey.
On this particular day I rose early and headed out. I knew that I needed to go to Columbia and take Hwy 99 east until it either ran into 431 or 31A and at that point I had a phone number of a guy named Bob. I had never met Bob but I did speak with him briefly by phone the day before.
Bob had a newly rebuilt engine for a 1995 Saturn and I just happened to have a 1995 Saturn, recently donated to the ministry, that needed a motor. With trailer and car in tow behind I journeyed east. A beautiful sunrise was in the making.
Mornings are my favorite time of the day. This particular one was cool and crisp, the sun was coming up and I had a John Piper "podcast" sermon on my ipod. LIFE IS GOOD!
I had driven about 50 miles when Hwy 99 came to an end. It was what seemed to be out in the middle of nowhere so I gave Bob a ring for further directions. Turns out ole' Bob didn't wake with the chickens nor did he answer his phone so after a few tries I had to make a corporate decision. I headed south hoping my right turn was the right direction. Turned out to be an interesting choice cause just a short piece down the road was an old country store that had been converted into an eatery. I was hungry so I found a place to park my rig and walked over to Marcy Jo's Bakery, Breakfast and Lunches. What a great little place this was. They weren't used to seeing many strangers in these parts and so the locals were quite inquisitive.
"Where you headed" one guy asked. "Well, I'm not really sure" I said. An old guy chucked as he muttered, "You just like draggin a car and trailer around not knowin where you are goin." I explained how I was taking the car to a guy named Bob who live around here somewhere. What was Bob's last name they asked? I just shook my head and said "I don't know." Knowing this would draw some laughter I just decided to laugh along with them.
"Are you a car dealer?" Finally the subject had changed. "No," I'm a not a car dealer, I do mission work in Guatemala but today I'm on another mission. One guy said "I guess if you ever find Bob you can tell him about Jesus." I just smiled and said "I might just do that."
"So what you gonna do with that there car?" It's for a young lady in Lawrenceburg I said. About that time my phone rang, it was Bob. As it turned out I was only 20 minutes away so I finished my breakfast, said my goodbyes and headed out. I needed to get the car dropped off and get back home ASAP.
Damsel in distress! The reason I was on this journey in the first place was that I had heard about a young lady in our church who needed a car. This 19 year old lives and manages on her own while working 60 hours a week at Mickey D's and is looking into starting some college courses very soon. All without transportation.
I just love it when the Lord is already working and I have the opportunity to get in on one of His plans. The car was one phone call away and so was the motor, well one phone call and $1100.00 but that was a small price for such a worthy cause. This young lady has been on her own most of her life and like most of us has made a mistake or two but all in all she is trying real hard to get ahead. I heard she wants to be a teacher one day. I hope this old car will help her out a bit.
ROAD TRIP DOS!
Bro. Steve Seaton and I fly Monday to Tucson, AZ and will catch a bus heading down to Guasave, MX. Pray for our safety and that we can sleep on the bus. We will be riding form 6pm to 6am. We have a busy day on Tuesday and then on Wednesday we'll do the trip in reverse getting home Thursday afternoon. Guess you'd call it a ROAD TRIP on STEROIDS!
Wishing you all a very Blessed New Year!
Lewis
As you are blessed be a blessing to others!
